Why is it that so often, an ukes grandmother (specifically her being sick or passing) is a plot point? In Jinx, kim dans grandmother is a big plot point, and now im reading sandwich paradox and Jiho’s grandmother is also an important plot point. Whats up with ukes and their grandmas
Well, I personally have quite a simple answer to that. I think it’s because, over the past few decades, more and more parents have had to leave their children in their grandparents’ care because they’re busy working, don’t have enough time, or simply have a lot on their plate. As a result, grandparents sometimes end up taking on much of the responsibility for bringing up their grandchildren and looking after them.
And I think that can make children feel as though their grandparents are the people who truly care about them and are always there for them. Because of that, I can see why a grandmother being sick or passing away could be used as such an important plot point—it can represent losing one of the people who played a major role in the character’s life and upbringing.
I can relate to that personally because I was brought up by my grandmother and her sister until I was about two or three, and they sometimes looked after my older brother as well. My parents were busy working, so my grandmother and her sister were the ones who took care of me most of the time when I was little.
